余熱鍋爐具有其回收“余熱的特殊性"，所以在設計余熱鍋爐時，必須對余熱的特殊性給予考慮。當工業爐排煙溫度大于500°C時，裝設余熱鍋爐產生蒸汽其效果是十分顯著的，在一般的情況下，如大，中，小型鋼管廠在每一只退火爐窯上，都可以安裝一臺余熱鍋爐。余熱鍋爐的結構形式采用臥式煙管傳熱的原則，鍋爐安裝在爐窯上面，把鍋筒、筒體的三分之一放在爐窯內進行直接受熱，再通過直排煙管進行三個回程，使大量的煙氣在煙管內傳熱，爐窯的煙氣流量大致在4500?6000m3/h時，都可以安裝一臺一噸的余熱鍋爐來提供生產用汽。
